The Pros
- No initial out of pocket expenses, meaning no fees, no down payment. Enables you to basically trade a lease payment with your electrical bill. The concept is that over time, as electrical costs go up, the lease payment is fixed, which in essence fixes your cost over the life of the system.
- This program as of 11/08 is the only rebate program that CT Clean Energy Fund (ccef) is funding, although you don't see it, because it is incorporated in your low-cost lease payment. So your lease payment is calculated on the gross system costs minus the ccef rebate. The leasing company takes advantage of the 30% federal investment tax credit.
- For homeowners on a fixed income or who have a tight budget, it is a great way to lower your electrical expense.
- At the end of the fifteen-year term, you can extend the lease for another five years at a greatly reduced monthly fee. There is a fair market buyout at the end of lease, if you should choose to purchase the system at that time.
- You have the preference of your own installers.
- There is no sales tax on the lease payment.
The Cons
- The lease is non-cancelable, which means you are not allowed to pay off the lease for any reason. You must make all payments, as scheduled.
- There are income limits to qualify for the program. It includes all income, including stocks sales, real estate sales, dividends, and interest on Line 22 of your form 1040.
- At the end of lease, you have to remove the system from your roof and return it to the leasing company.
