1/16/09 - Ct homeowner's are starting to embrace the solar lease program. The fact is the lease is the only "game in town" because the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) has run out of funds until the budget year June 2010. The fact is if you qualify for the lease it is a good deal because it offers the maximum CCEF rebate although you won't notice it because the rebate is buried in your lease payment. The contractor calculates the total cost of the solar system and then minuses the CCEF rebate and then calculates your monthly payment. In most cases, the cost of the lease is approximately equal to the electric cost savings. The catch is that as electric costs go up (which we all know is going to happen) the cost of the lease stays the same as your utility costs go up. For instance, if the contractor quotes you a $100/month lease payment and that solar system produces $98/month in electrical savings you would basically swap bills (lease payment for electric payment). But if you electric bill doubles in the next 7 years, like it has in the past, then your savings becomes $196/month and your lease payment remains $100. And don't forget you are burning a clean, renewable energy instead of electric from coal, oil or gas.
